The second sermon of our Revelation series encouraged us to patiently endure as we wait for Jesus’ return. In this second part of his introduction, John gives us a glorious vision of the exalted Lord Jesus through Revelation 1:9-20. John introduces himself as a brother and partner in the ongoing tribulation, making every attempt to identify with his readers and to encourage them toward endurance in present suffering. While John was instructed by God to write to the seven churches, we see the symbolism of the number seven representing fullness and completion. This thereby extends his address to us - the church of God, all believers to whom the Gospel has been preached. John’s vision describes Jesus the Son of Man and the Son of God, the risen Lord, who walks among His church and powerfully holds His people in His hands despite all their persecution, suffering, flaws, and compromises. This presents a glorious picture of Jesus who is majestic, utterly in control, and full of wisdom. Come find encouragement in the risen Lord Jesus, who holds eternity in His hands; for Jesus alone will help us endure in this world while we wait for His glorious return.
