Continuing in our sermon series through Revelation 3:1-13, we looked at the letters written to the churches in Sardis and Philadelphia. Here we see Jesus’ words both as a wake-up call against complacency and a call to hold fast. As Jesus speaks to the church in Sardis, He sees their true spiritual state - an external facade of life and good works, but internally incomplete and dead. To the church in Philadelphia, Jesus speaks as the only one able to grant access into God’s eternal presence - urging them to continue in patient endurance with His promise to vindicate and establish them in His presence forever. Similarly, our outward lives may often reflect a Christian exterior while inwardly we spiritually turn away from Christ. Let us heed the call to wake up and strengthen what remains; to remember the Gospel we once heard and received. Let us repent of sin and hold fast to the grace of Jesus Christ, knowing that He will keep us in His glorious presence for eternity as Jesus writes His name on our hearts.
