Neither Hot Nor Cold: Overcoming Spiritual Complacency

November 10, 2024

Last Sunday, we looked at the seventh and final letter written to the church of Laodicea from Revelation 3:14-22. Here we see a shift in the structure of Jesus’ words to the seven churches. There is no thanksgiving, praise, or encouragement for the church of Laodicea - only a strong call to wake up and repent. Jesus’ introductory words provide a stark contrast: Jesus is proclaimed to be the true, trustworthy, and faithful witness, the Creator and Ruler of all things; while the rest of the letter challenges the repulsive, revolting, nominal outward christianity of the Laodicean church. The affluence and wealth of Laodicea led to self-reliance and self-sufficiency. Jesus looks through their outward appearance and sees their true spiritual state. Despite their spiritual poverty and conceit, they are still loved and have hope for restoration. Jesus provides the remedy for spiritual complacency and lukewarm faith as He calls us to repentance. Jesus gave His life on the cross, so that pitiful wretched sinners like us could be forgiven. Even when we are cold and blind, Jesus in His patience and kindness offers the wonderful blessing of eternity with Him. Heed the call to repent and open the door for Christ Jesus to take His rightful place as Lord of all.
