On Sunday, we continued in our sermon series on Romans 8:1-17 to consider how Christians ought to live in the freedom received from Christ Jesus. Paul reminds us that there is no condemnation for those who believe in Christ. Having once been held captive by sin, we have been set free through Jesus who bore our sins on the cross and fulfilled the requirements of the law on our behalf. Followers of Jesus now live and are led by the Spirit. Paul highlights two key marks of a Spirit-led life: a mind set on things of the Spirit - calling us to live according to the Spirit and not the flesh; and the empowering presence of the Spirit within us - the Holy Spirit dwelling in us to bring spiritual life and transformation. As God’s children, we are no longer debtors to sin. This new life in the Spirit frees us from fear and invites us to live joyfully in the freedom Christ has accomplished for us.
