In the final installment of our Matthew 5-7 sermon series, we looked at the ending of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. As Jesus concludes this section, we are left with three parables that challenge us to respond rightly to all that He has taught. In the first parable, we see the way of Jesus symbolized by a narrow gate and hard path; it is the way of submitting to His kingship, hearing His teaching, and obeying His word. The second parable shows us that true and false teaching can be distinguished by the fruit that results from it. Good works and righteous living are not the root of salvation, but the fruit of salvation. Jesus brings His sermon to a close through the parable of the wise and foolish builder. Judgement day is soon approaching; and Jesus alone is the true teacher who can bring us into His kingdom if we listen and obey His words. As the crowds recognized Jesus’ authority and teaching, let us too respond in obedience and faith. Come to Jesus in repentance and be welcomed into the kingdom of heaven.
