In our ongoing series through Romans 6:15-23, we see how Paul challenges the idea that true freedom allows us to live without restraint or consequences. Paul wants us to see that the Gospel of Jesus does not make us sin more, neither is it a free ticket to continue in sin; but the Gospel instead brings us freedom to live for righteousness. Paul shows us that all of humanity serves something or someone - we can either serve our own passions and desires, or we can serve in obedience. The pursuit of our own desires leads us to a life of sin which promises happiness, but ultimately enslaves us toward death. Yet through Jesus’ work on the cross, He rescued us from the power and bondage of sin. Jesus brings us new life, a new identity, and a new Master. The Gospel liberates us and gives us the power to live a life of thankfulness and service under the reign of the good God. We are then faced with a decision to choose our master; where only One will make us truly free.
